The orchestral palette grew partly because instruments themselves kept changing in design, range, and reliability. The richly decorated Hellier Stradivarius violin was made in 1679 and is one of Stradivari's rare inlaid instruments. Niccolò Paganini performed on a celebrated Guarneri del Gesù violin that later became associated with Genoa.
