Inside the music
Composers create orchestral color by alternating, layering, and blending different instrumental families. Orchestration is partly the art of balancing colors so that one musical idea can move naturally between different instruments. The orchestral string section is commonly divided into first violins, second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
