From recording history
Some of the earliest phonographs were powered simply by hand-spun wheels rather than electricity. The sound quality of the first phonographs was crude by modern standards, but audiences were fascinated that sound could return at all. Edison's tinfoil phonograph caused a public sensation in 1878 because recorded sound itself was still astonishingly new.
