About live performance
The modern symphony orchestra can trace part of its ancestry to the Twenty-Four Violins of the King in France. Jean-Baptiste Lully became one of the early figures associated with directing an orchestra as a distinct musical role. The richly decorated Hellier Stradivarius violin was made in 1679 and is one of Stradivari's rare inlaid instruments.
