A Smithsonian Cousino tape cartridge dates from 1963, when magnetic tape formats were still rapidly evolving. Before cassette and 8-track formats became familiar, many competing tape-cartridge designs appeared. Bernard Cousino developed a single-loop magnetic tape cartridge in 1952 for repeated playback in advertising.
