A Smithsonian cigar-box guitar from North Carolina dates to roughly 1875-1899. Homemade cigar-box guitars turned an ordinary wooden container into the body of a playable stringed instrument. The cigar-box instrument tradition remained visible in American vernacular music well into the twentieth century.
