Smith's career crossed jazz clubs, radio, orchestral work, recording studios, and popular songwriting. Johnny Smith wrote Walk Don't Run, which became a Top 10 hit for the Ventures in 1960. Smith's 1952 recording of Moonlight in Vermont with Stan Getz became an influential example of cool jazz guitar.
