From the wider music world

Cigar-box guitars and fiddles became important low-cost instruments in jug-band and blues traditions. Homemade cigar-box guitars turned an ordinary wooden container into the body of a playable stringed instrument. A Smithsonian cigar-box guitar from North Carolina dates to roughly 1875-1899.
