The instrument itself

Bow maker François Tourte became so influential that he has been called the Stradivari of the bow. The orchestral palette grew partly because instruments themselves kept changing in design, range, and reliability. The viola d'amore historically used sympathetic strings that vibrated along with the strings being played.
