From recording history
The Volta Laboratory made an experimental sound recording on a glass disc on November 17, 1884. Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory was among the places experimenting with recorded sound in the 1880s. The Smithsonian preserves experimental recordings from an era when engineers were still discovering what a recording medium could be.
