The sound quality of the first phonographs was crude by modern standards, but audiences were fascinated that sound could return at all. An early Edison tinfoil phonograph could hold roughly a minute of recorded sound. Edison's tinfoil phonograph caused a public sensation in 1878 because recorded sound itself was still astonishingly new.
