Why 920 JAM exists

My wife and I have spent countless evenings doing what many people in Northeast Wisconsin do. We'd have a free Friday, a Thursday after work, or maybe a Saturday afternoon and ask a simple question:

"Who's playing tonight?"

It sounds like an easy question, but it rarely had an easy answer.

Some bands post on Facebook. Some venues update their websites. Others rely on word of mouth, community calendars, or printed posters. There was no single place where you could simply choose a day, choose a band, or choose a venue and quickly see what was happening across Northeast Wisconsin.

So I started making lists.

Those lists became spreadsheets. The spreadsheets became research. Before long, I had gathered hundreds of bands, venues, and events. What began as a way to answer my own question slowly grew into something much bigger.

920 JAM was created to help people discover the incredible live music happening every week across Northeast Wisconsin, from neighborhood pubs and breweries to community stages, festivals, historic theaters, and the places that quietly support local musicians year after year.

One thought kept coming back to me throughout this project.

The currency of local live music is food and beverage.

Most local musicians aren't supported by ticket sales alone. They're supported by people who gather with friends, order dinner, enjoy a drink, and stay to hear a great band. When we support the venues, we help support the musicians. When we support the musicians, we create more reasons for people to gather in those venues. It is a cycle that benefits everyone.

That is why the line at the top of this site isn't just a slogan.

Supporting local live music and the venues that support it.

That's the mission.

My hope is that 920 JAM becomes a practical guide for deciding what to hear tonight, this weekend, or in the weeks ahead. More importantly, I hope it helps more people discover talented musicians, welcoming venues, and memorable nights they might otherwise have missed.
